Martin Rhead was a founder member and first President of the Mijas La Cala Lions formed in January 1998. He left behind a strong and vibrant club that raises many thousands of euros each year for charity. As a diabetic himself he helped Anne and Frank Bowles to form the La Cala Lions Diabetic Support Group over 7 years ago. As most of you know I have enjoyed many years as editor of the Costa Del Sol Golf News and, although unofficially retired, I have decided to bring out a collection of amusing stories and funny yarns associated with my world of golf.

“GOLF CAN BE A VERY FUNNY GAME!” has come about by remembering stories told to me by many of my golfing buddies and acquaintances on the coast over a period of nearly 14 years.

I have taken the liberty of quoting several of my golfing friends and furthermore have given them, in some cases, a ‘by-line’ along with a pictorial mention. I’m sure those selected will ‘forgive’ me when you know that I intend to donate every penny taken on the sale of this book to my special charity – The Mijas La Cala Lions Diabetic Support Group. If I have offended anyone then I am truly sorry. However, golf can be a very funny game and I, along with many of my friends over the years, have laughed at the antics and misfortunes of fellow players, sniggered at an air-shot or tittered at a ‘hamlet-style’ effort to play out of a bunker! We have all been the butt of certain jokes but that is all part of the amateur game. How refreshing it is to be part of the banter that goes on in the clubhouse after an enjoyable round.

The book retails at just 5 euros making it a ‘must’ for the stocking filler at Christmas or an extra prize at a winners’ presentation.

This has come about by The Gemini Masonic Lodge giving me a very generous donation to cover all lay-out and printing costs.

I hope you are able to support my money-raising scheme by buying a few copies to hand out as presents or to put on show in your retail outlet and sell the book to your customers.

“GOLF CAN BE A VERY FUNNY GAME!” is purely a tongue-in-cheek compilation of tales – some true, some with embellishments – aimed at amusing all golfers and non-golfers, who like a chuckle. I hope you enjoy my effort enough to tell your friends about my book and persuade them to buy a copy.
