NEWS FROM MIJAS LA CALA LIONS

The Mijas La Cala Lions recently organized a charity golf day, mainly sponsored by The De Vere Group of Marbella, at Miraflores Golf greatly assisted by Alf Pilkington and ‘Scooby’ Sinden of Animal Welfare.

Over 2.660 euros was raised on the day and was split fifty-fifty between Animal Welfare and The Mijas La Cala Lions Diabetic Support Group.

The main prize of the day was the Martin Rhead Memorial Trophy put up by The Lions in memory of their first President. Martin worked tirelessly for many years to raise money for local charities and those in need becoming a living legend in La Cala Village until he passed away. Over 80 golfers took part on the day playing a two-ball better-ball format for The Cup and many other prizes. Around 100 were present for the lunch and presentation afterwards.

Alf Pilkington was delighted with the turn-out and thanked everybody concerned with making the day so successful. ‘I should like to give a special vote of thanks to the Board of Miraflores Golf Club for special prices on the day, the restaurant staff for providing an excellent lunch and to Nicolas Cole of The De Vere Group and all the other sponsors.  Alan de Ward entertained us with his fine singing.’

The Diabetic Support Group (DSG) was founded by Anne and Frank Bowles with the co-operation of Martin and Barbara Rhead in 2003. Both couples had a diabetic in the family.

Martin, the past-President and founder member of The Mijas La Cala Lions, gave Anne and Frank the incentive to form a group to help all English-speaking diabetics from Malaga to Gibraltar who required additional assistance. This enabled the two of them to develop the idea. It was clear that little or no support was available for diabetics in Southern Spain through the normal medical channels. The Lions gave them the ‘umbrella’ of a recognised and established organisation and helped fund the operation.

Since those early days the group has helped and assisted over 500 diabetics to come to terms with their condition. The DSG is able to advise and guide, through specialised doctors and nurses, any one who is a diabetic.
